Many students fail to recognize the assumptions, limitations, behavioral implications and qualitative factors that influence managerial decision-making. About the Author
Leslie G. Eldenburg, PhD, is a McCoy-Rogers Fellow at the University of Arizona. She has also taught at California State University-Fresno. She received her MBA and PhD from the University of Washington. She passed the CPA exam in 1985 and has taught review courses for the CMA exam. Leslie has served as faculty advisor for an IMA student chapter and for the Multicultural Business Student Association. She received a number of awards recognizing her activities in teaching, student support, and as faculty advisor for student organizations. She is an active member of the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Management Section of the AAA, the IMA, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. She has served on and chaired numerous committees within these organizations and currently is the Management Section's Secretary-Treasurer and co-chairs its Doctoral Consortium Committee. Before becoming an academic, she worked in hospital finance at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Her research interests include issues in healthcare and hospital accounting, and she has published in The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Journal of Medical Decision Making, The Journal of Corporate Finance, The International Journal of Accounting, Information Systems Research, Healthcare Financial Management, and Controller's Quarterly. In addition, she currently serves on several editorial boards. Leslie has also co-authored chapters in Health Care Administration, The Encyclopedia of Accounting, and the Forthcoming Handbook of Management Accounting research, and Handbook of Cost Accounting.

Susan K. Wolcott, PhD, CPA, CMA, is an educational consultant with WolcottLynch Associates. Her consulting practice takes her to conferences and campuses around the world where she works with faculty and programs to support critical thinking development, competency assessment, and curriculum innovation. Her publication include Developing Critical Thinking Skills: The Key to Professional Competencies, an American Accounting Association Academic Partners Toolkit. She chaired the AICPA Core Competency Framework Curriculum Evaluation Task Force, developed the Taxonomy of AICPA Core Competencies, and authored numerous assessment materials for the AICPA Educational Competency Assessment Web site. Additional publications can be found in Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting Education, Assessment Update, IDEA Center Papers, and other journals. She is a member of the AAA, IMA, IIA, and Washington Society of CPAs, where she participates on the Consulting Services Committee. She previously served on the board of directors, as President of the Educational Foundation, and as Chair of the Education Committee of the Colorado Society of CPAs. She also served as Vice President of Membership for the Portland-Columbia Chapter of the IMA and was a program committee member and presenter for the AACSB Outcomes Assessment Seminar. She was previously on the accounting faculty at the University of Denver, where she received the MBA Core Diamond Award for teaching. She regularly teaches CPA and CMA review courses, and she ahs also taught courses at the University of Washington, Helsinki School of Economics-Mikkeli, Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, and J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. She worked in public accounting for ten years, including three years with Coopers & Lybrand (Portland, Oregon). She holds PhD and MS degrees in Accounting and Information Systems from Northwestern University and a BBA in Accounting from the University of Portland.

Kindle edition is too shortened, so it's lost its value

Kindle edition of this book is a shortened version of the printed one.

Only part of the subject material as well as practice questions are included to the Kindle Edition in comparison with the printed (full and fundamental) version. It seems that Manhattan contradicts itself saying that they provide only deep, focused coverage of a specialized area. The subject material is incomplete and few practice questions are presented in this version. There 163 pages but it's due to a large font which is used in the book.

Ruth Montgomery, was a syndicated newspaper columnist when she began exploring psychic phenomena and attending seances. While retaining the skepticism of her trade, she kept an open mind while experiencing various occult mysteries. I've owned this hardcover book since the late 60'sand I will NOT part with it! It whet my appetite and set me off on an incredible journey of exploration about reincarnation and I haven't stopped since. I've re-read it every decade since! I highly recommned it as a good primer!

A Search for the Truth by Ruth Montgomery

This is one of my favorite Ruth Montgomery books. She is an award-winning, entertaining, easy to read, and engrossing author.

This book is about her beginning path in the exploration of the metaphysical world. She visited psychics of all kinds with the intention of writing a debunking article for the newspaper she worked for back then. She was well-versed as a journalist in the political arena prior to her exploration of this field and covered the terms of four presidents.

Amazingly enough, she became a convert, and from this book forward writes about different aspects of the healing world. Every book she writes is just awesome. My other favorites are Born to Heal (the story of Bill Gray) and A World Beyond (after Bill Gray dies, she channels him through the process of automatic writing. They write a book about what happens on the other side after we die.)

If you are a non-believer, this may help you understand the other "weird" people out there. Ruth does her research and checks out every fact she can when she writes.

A little remembered kick-off

There is an interesting chronology that is worth discussing here. The mid-sixties was a period later designated as the opening salvo of several waves of spiritual energy that would lead up to a quantum leap of consciousness yet to happen in the beginning of the twenty-first century, the so-called New Earth. A speed-up of time began which got an extra boost every decade.
The most visible contenders at the starting gate were Ruth Montgomery, Jane Roberts, Mark Prophet and Helen Schucman (whose ACIM work took about 10 years and was published in 1975)
A lesser known trumpet from the UK, Ruth White, was the channel for Gildas Communicates. Each of these authors brought dramatically new and fresh channeled material to public attention.
Though Gift of Prophecy was written in 1965, it was primarily a book of reporting that would convince NY publishers of the author's potential to deliver metaphysical content.
This rather neglected lesser-known Search for Truth from Ruth in 1967 is an introduction to what later developed into a rather daring and glamorous career as a metaphysical writer and channel. In this work, subtitled "A noted reporter discloses her own remarkable experiences in the field of psychic phenomena and finds a new dimension of life--and hope--for all" Ruth confides her early skepticism. She had actually written debunking material that she intended to publish, but was told by spirit not to. An interview she conducted with Arthur Fold led her to try her hand, quite successfully, at automatic writing. The rest is history, her guides have been feeding her material ever since.

Her material is still uplifting and of educational value to this day. Without her advance preparation the channels that followed would have had a much harder time gaining the acceptance momentum that she provided.

Great examples of practical optoelectronic circuits

If you are a physicist or engineer, you'll find plenty of textbooks on optics, electronics, and optoelectronics, but probably not many examples of optoelectronic circuits. That is where the value of this book lies. There are the very basics of theory on optics in these chapters, but you will need to read other books to really be able to say you know optics. Chapter 3 is where the book takes a big upswing in quality and uniqueness. This chapter on optocouplers and optointerfacing and the example circuits are brilliant. Obvious and plain commonsense, you'll ask yourself "why didn't I think of it"? "Optocouplers and optointerfacing" presents a great many circuits for any number of purposes and the standouts would have to be the TTL - to - RS-232 interface, RS-232 infrared data transmission system and, a high speed RS-232 infrared computer interface. In later chapters we get to "wireless security systems" another interesting subject. The schematics are quite clear, contain comprehensive parts lists and include manufacturers of unusual parts. I didn't check the degree of ease or difficulty of sourcing these parts but I note that light dependent resistors and the phototransistor are manufactured by Vactec. They are not mentioned in the appendix of sources and vendors. Later chapters in my opinion only get better and better provided you have an interest in these areas.
In summary I highly recommend this book to individuals who want to get their hands on some concrete projects that unite the power of electronics and optics, provided they have other sources for the theory and also provided they are prepared to do some hunting for some of the rarer devices needed to build some of the circuits.
