for truly validating the best part of my career

I spent over 30 years as a first line manager with a small pharmaceutical company. I had a very successful style of leading (not managing) that put the employee first and allowed a lot of autonomy in getting the job done. Ross has done a fabulous job of putting into words and action just how this works. In my last five years of my tenure as a manager and as my small company began morphing into "big pharma" I was essentially directed to abandon what had worked so well and forced to become an order giver. Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process particularly suited to the rendering of tonal gradations that was used from the 17th through the 19th centuries to create reproductions of paintings. With the widespread adoption of photographic reproductive methods, mezzotint use shifted to the creation of original images. Wax, who is a mezzotint artist, has combined a history of mezzotint with instructions for artists who wish to work in mezzotint today. Like the mezzotint process, Wax's text is painstaking and requires patience to complete, but she provides a wealth of information on one of today's lesser-known printmaking processes. The volume is well illustrated and is suitable for interested laypersons and art historians as well as practicing artists.

The Bible for the Mezzotint

Not only is Carol Wax one of the greatest mezzotint artists alive, she has written the best history and lexicon for this fine and old printmaking technique. Reading this book will either make you want to make a mezzotint or purchase one.

Simply Fantasticor

This is a very thorough compendium of the history, technical and aesthetic issues surrounding this rich and surprisingly versatile intaglio process. As was mentioned in other reviews Ms. Wax is a master of the techniques and she is particularly adept and thorough presenting the essentials for making good grounds. This has been enormously useful to me in teaching this technique to my students. Most printmaking technique books offer, at best, a cursory examination of the process an are typically thin on important details like inks, wiping, papers, metal types, etc, etc.

The book is apparently out of print. I managed to purchase a fine hardback copy with a stamped "Columbus Public Library" on the paper edge from one of amazon's many used book partners for a very reasonable price. No university printmaking studio or program should be without this book, it's that good!

As an added bonus there is a wealth of historical and contemporary mezzotint works including those by Ms. wax and many, many others. If this wasn't such an esoteric art form I would recommend a new edition to include even more contemporary works.

Expression of grand ideas in simple words

Unlike many other textbooks, Carson Dye's work is a piece of art. He does not only write well, but he also expresses his ideas in a clear manner. The language of the book is very understandable. Chapters are short and easy to comprehend. The light nature of the book does not, however, minimize the grand ideas and tips of how to become a good leader. Each and every word has a meaning without going around the idea, but simply stating it. Compared to other books on leadership and management, this one blows the competition away and is highly recommended.

Rent, read, enjoy!

I typically skim through leadership books, but I actually read every single page of this one and enjoyed it - remarkable, as it was for a graduate school management class! I was VERY happy and HIGHLY recommend renting this book if it is for a class. I had been expecting a full blown textbook, but it's the size of a regular book so you'll be pretty sad to have spent $70+ on this bad boy. Renting is the way to go, plus mine came with some helpful highlighting from a previous user. This book has a lot to offer for those looking to explore different management techniques and how to navigate leadership in healthcare.
