Beautiful Start

This book is a beautiful start to the series that introduces you to a lot of memorable moments that I felt was enjoyable. It was a shame this series did not last longer but from what you can read it is truly a stunning journey.

Story Stops Half Way Through to Make You Buy the Next One, If You Want to Find Out How it Ends

Let me firstly say I'm a huge fan of Avril Lavigne, I've got all her albums, she's one of the few modern era young musicians who actually writes her own songs and lyrics. It is obvious though, that the editor, book publishers or whoever should have insisted she play a bit heavier part in writing this thing, as it is simply a pretty mediocre storyline. On the first page, we get a message from Avril where she tells us she is excited at the opportunity to create a graphic novel. However what part she actually played is a bit ambiguous as the concept on the next page is claimed by someone called Camilla d-Errico. Camilla also claims to have done the art and written the thing with someone else called Joshua Dysart. So did Avril sit around a boardroom table with these guys and give suggestions for the plot, who knows. One's things for sure, that amazing lyric writing talent should have been used instead of the drivel d-Errico and Dysart came up with. Saying what they wrote is pretty average is being very kind. There's hardly any substance to the plot of an unpopular loner girl, who talks to her imaginary hero and friend (Avril Lavigne). Hana stumbles upon a website called Makes Wishes and it's not really explained what she does or why but a box arrives with a very poorly drawn multiple horned red demon inside who encourages her rebellious streak such as urinating in the street. Oh and if she snaps of each of its five horns she gets a wish for each. Avril warns her time and again to not use the demon but Hana wants a better life.

The pictures are pretty average as well. Most of the characters look the same, even one of the girls who was making fun of Hana looked exactly like her but taller. The Avril Lavigne imaginary friend looks nothing like Avril, although they do seem to be able to draw Avril as she looks more realistic in the posters on walls.

Plus we have the ultimate con, the graphic novel doesn't actually end. It just cuts out as if a whole story was written and ripped in two. So therefore if one of your five wishes was to know if two of Hana's four wishes made so far will also come true, as well as what her fifth is, you'll have to buy volume 2. Unethically this isn't mentioned anywhere on the cover. Buying this you'd assume it's a standalone read.

i thought this was a very nice little manga series. i give it 4 stars only because i really think volume 2 didn't give any real resolution. i also give it 4 stars because i felt that the main character has great relateability. wish there had been a third volume, but i highly reccomend. i think it's a lot better than the manga series they did based off Courtney Love.

Far Better than the Press Release Says

I've read all of Mr. Berry's essays, from his very first up to and including this collection.
I believe these are some of the best he has ever written.
They are mature, thoughtful, and wise.
His writing style is deliberate, and his essays here are sometimes lengthy but never boring. They pull you in and require participation on your part, not just a skimming over or a diversionary read.
Whoever wrote the official summary for the book shown on Amazon's title page (and elsewhere), did a very poor job. It doesn't accurately reflect the content of the book and the intelligence, passion, and compassion in his work.
Reading some of these won't make you feel good, and that's not Mr. Berry's purpose. But I guarantee they will make you feel, and for an essayist, that's a worthy accomplishment.
I wish Wendell Berry was more widely read than he is. He's an American treasure, a true patriot, and smart as hell.
One final note: I enjoyed the physical size of the hardcover. It's smaller than his latest collections of poetry, and easy to grasp and read. The font is clear, the line spacing on the pages perfect, so buy this, borrow it, or whatever- just get ahold of a copy and enjoy Wendell at his best.

Wendell Bery never fails. You can open to any random page and be drawn in by his clear logic and real world examples. "There can be no balance between freedom and secret police, freedom and universal suspicion, freedom and tyranny. There is only choice." Be ready for many more.

Engaging and fun, with a few flaws

Like all DK Eyewitness travel books this one is packed with nice photographs to illustrate the pages and make it fun to read. I was looking for a review book as well as an introductory guide for my wife that would be more interesting than a plain text phrasebook, and it qualifies well.

The flaw that I have noted, (and is presumably corrected if you have the version with the 2 CDs), is that the pronunciation guides (phonetic examples) are written using UK English, rather than American English. So "raucher" (smoking) is given as "row-kher". Because we pronounce "row" differently from the English (rhymes with cow), this is a problem. I have not seen many cases of this, but there may be others.

Roda's book, while being still one of the most comprehensive on this subject, is showing its age, and would profit from an updated rev to keep up with state of the art developments. Obsolete CCIR and NBS references must be replaced with the latest ITU and NIST equivalents, higher 'tropo' data rate capabilities using modern modulation techniques should be dealt with, etc.

Review of 'Troposcatter', G Roda

This is an excellent text for students, radio system planners, academics and engineers who have exposure to the the world of radio systems and getting the most out of them.
The book is regarded as a classic text, and although a little dated in the current world of GSM,CDMA and high density radio communications, it does provide the reader a broad understanding of principles. The current dense environment of radio systems in cities is complimented by the use of radio in remote or underdeveloped countries, and that is where this book excels.
The book would be invaluable to Defence personnel involved in radio communications, giving them a possible alterate means to achieve communications deep into hostile or uncontrolled territory without satellites.
I would strongly recommend this text to Amateur Radio operators who have interests in long-haul VHF/UHF communications. It is much more prescriptive than say the RSGB or ARRL handbooks, and it offers a means to predict radio system performance over long distances.
If you are looking for a book on cellular communications, satellite communications or radio astronomy - then this book IS NOT appropriate.
Value for money - excellent, even here in Australia !
I purchased my copy in 1989, and it will always stay on my reference bookshelf.

Minutely detailed, yet highly readable

For a book on a fairly obscure topic, this is excellently organized and written. The author clearly has had intimate experience with minute aspects of many a tropo-link project, and he has been able to refine and crystallize his thoughts into this beautifully linear presentation.

The only problem with Roda's "Troposcatter" is that it is a bit dated. He makes statements implying that bit-rates are limited due to the troposphere's Doppler spread and multi-path; in reality both these parameters of the troposphere are far less challenging than the corresponding parameters for a cell-phone channel. Clearly the book was written before the acronyms OFDM, LDPC and MIMO entered the communication engineer's parlance. So discount whatever Roda has to say about digital tropo-links.

A closer look at Bonaparte

Being a fan of the film director Stanley Kubrick, I found out he vigorously studied Napoleon and stated once that he knew every little detail about his life. So I figured I'd pick up a book on Napoleon and see what all the fuss was about. And I must say, although I'm not finished with the book yet, it's proven to be, indeed, an 'intimate' biography on Napoleon. If you like details and facts that don't usually appeal to most people, then this'll be a great read. Not to mention the authors great style of writing.

An Intimate look at a very public man

The author's stated reason for writing this biography of one of history's most compelling figures is his dissatisfaction with other biographies' exploration of Napoleon as a man, husband, father, and friend. While relying heavily on the memoirs of people who knew Napoleon personally, the author certainly manages to close this alleged gap in the historical analysis of Napoleon's life. The biography focuses on who Napoleon was, and discusses what he did only as a means of creating a better understanding of who he was as a person. In some cases this leads to completely ignoring certain events which are arguably highly important historical moments on the world stage. Notably missing from the American perspective is any mention at all of the Louisiana purchase, and in fact America is mentioned only in passing a handful of times, despite the long standing French presence in North America. However, I find the personal focus to be a positive element of the book rather than a negative, because the events of Napoleon's life which can be easily learned through many other sources are best understood by first understanding the heart and mind of the man making the decisions that led to those events.

That understanding is a goal that the author accomplishes with an enjoyable, easily readable style that is both informative and impressive on its own literary merits. The tone of the biography is far from objective in an absolute sense, but while the reader can easily conclude that the author is an admirer of Napoleon, the man's faults and mistakes are examined along with his triumphs and virtues. In all cases, the objective is to paint a complete portrait of a man who came from humble beginnings, believed passionately in both personal and national principles, and who sought to conduct himself with honor and integrity for the betterment of his family and nation.

While Napoleon in both his own lifetime and since has been widely criticized as consumed by ambition and power-seeking, this biography demonstrates a heart and mind devoted to servanthood combined with tireless action to administer a national government newly formed from the ashes of a corrupt and selfish monarchy. Almost equal attention is given to Napoleon's domestic policies and acts as to his foreign affairs, which mainly consisted of attempting to extract France from a series of wars brought on by the revolution's overthrow of the Bourbon dynasty. In between planning campaigns against Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Britain, Napoleon also planned and implemented improvements to France's finances, agriculture, trade, legal system, and culture through the upgrade of public infrastructure such as roads and aqueducts, a ruthless crackdown on public corruption by government officials, the promotion of the arts and sciences through education and personal patronage, just to name a few. In his first exile on Elba, he even devoted himself to improving the economy and culture of the island.

Scant attention is paid to France's military campaigns in any way that would appeal to devotees of military history, but they are discussed as insights into Napoleon's strategic thinking, quick mind, and inventive approach to problem solving on and off the battlefield. His endless devotion to the wellbeing of the men under his command is highlighted again and again.

While not a history of the time period, the understanding provided in this biography of one of the period's leading figures provides a necessary and compelling counterpoint to the often British dominated perspective of Western history that casts the French revolution as a mindless bloodbath of psychopaths, and Napoleon as an empire building tyrant. Full detail of the man who chased his dream

This book tells very specific detail of Napoleon's life. Story begins from childhood in Corsica then his constant victories on wars and tragic ending in St.helena island. Until I read this book , I didn't even know Napoleon's mother's tongue was Italian, not French. It really surprised me that an ordinary soldier became an emperor of France and threatning entire Europe. What was his secret to achieve his dream. Read this book, and you will get an answer.
