Superb commentary

I'm actually currently in the middle of this commentary, but it's superb from the part of it I've read so far.

First, let me say that this is NOT a devotional commentary; it is a very technical commentary that delves pretty deeply into the details of the text. It covers textual issues like translation, redaction and form critical views on the text, parallel texts, genre analysis, etc. I've found the authors to be very careful commentators, even in cases where I don't necessarily agree with them. (Even speaking as an evangelical I liked it; the authors are clearly NOT evangelical, or even necessarily that conservative, but I can find much benefit from it even so).

I particularly appreciate their discussion of how each Psalm fits in with the overall picture of the Psalms and the rest of Scripture. (The authors present the rather unique view that the ordering of the Psalms is very deliberate - there's a structure to the Psalms as a whole; I find that helpful).

Definitely recommended. I'm used to reading more devotional commentaries like Matthew Henry, who are helpful in their own right but obviously this book isn't the same type of commentary. This book provides a much different kind of information than you'd find in that type of commentary and is extremely helpful (especially if that's the only type of commentary you've read). If you're reading this for personal enrichment, I recommend studying both "side by side" to be honest - that's what I've been doing and it's been extraordinarily helpful to my personal Bible study. You'll gain a much richer understanding of the text than you would otherwise.

Just as a quick formatting thing - the authors give the translation (along with footnoted commentary) at the beginning of the chapter and don't repeat the verses when they're doing the verse-by-verse comments. I understand why they did that (saves space) but it can be a little inconvenient to flip back and forth between the text and the comments. Personally, I just keep a Bible handy for the verse-by-verse comments, so that's an easy enough solution.

Just a quick note to my fellow evangelicals. Those of us who hold to Biblical infallibility (myself included) tend, I think, to be extremely suspicious of any use of things like redaction criticism which (to us) sometimes automatically mean "the Bible is wrong." I don't think that that's necessarily the case, especially with O.T. texts like the Psalms. There was clearly some degree of redaction (editing) going on in several texts; consider the fact that Proverbs mentions Hezekiah's men adding additional material to the book, or the fact that Deuteronomy mentions Moses's death. (Yeah, I do realize that some people think that Moses wasn't the author, but I hold to the traditional view that he wrote it). This doesn't mean that the text is wrong, "less infallible," or less inspired as a result of the later edits; it's just a reflection of the fact that authorship in several of the O.T. books is much more complicated than it is in many of the N.T. books. For example, Paul's letters are pretty easy - Paul wrote the whole thing. Not too interesting. Books like Psalms and Proverbs are much, much more complicated though. So I don't think that we should feel at all threatened by the (appropriate and cautious) use of redaction criticism on these books.

In this historical romance set in 915, English Viking Rorik Haraldsson seeks to avenge the slaughter of his wife and children by the Irish warrior Einar. Orphaned at 12, Mirana was raised by Einar to be self-reliant; she can keep house and fight like a man. To Rorik's surprise, she is not the only woman with notions of independence. He's Supposed To Be The Hero

I found it difficult to connect with the characters: Rorik and Mirana. I understand that Rorik is angry, since Mirana is the half-sister of Einar - the man who butchered his wife and young children - but the first half of the book is all about him abusing Mirana - starving her, punching her, whipping her, etc. Than, all of a sudden, it's like we've entered a different book! He now wants to marry her - and she accepts! Everything is fine until Rorik family comes and reminds him who she is - the half-sister of his enemy - than he's mean toward her again. I don't know how Mirana could love him - especially, at one point in the second half of the book, she think he's going to murder her!

I understand that, as Vikings, the men could be physically violent, even toward women - but this is supposed to be a romance, a fantasy. There is nothing romantic about a man punching a women unconscious because he doesn't like what she says...and he's supposed to be the hero!

The solutions manual only contains solutions for the about the first 20 problems in each chapter. With each chapter having over 100 problems this does not come close to covering each kind of problem and how to solve them.

Whether you are coming from the Agile side of the house, or have a more traditional background, Johanna Rothman’s Agile and Lean Program Management is something you are going to want to have on hand if you are trying to manage work at the program and portfolio level within a work context that incorporates Agile and Lean practices.

The book offers an explanation of how to go about setting up your program environment in a very clear and pragmatic way. The author’s range of experience in both legacy and Agile methods is a great help here as she offers explanations as to why certain approaches are more likely to lead to successful outcomes than others and provides anecdotes highlighting these points. Those new to Agile, or who feel that the language used by Agilists can be a bit daunting, should find the explanations easy to understand as they are provided in a concise manner that doesn’t get too twisted up in jargon.

One of the aspects of the book I found to be the most valuable was the explanation of signs, symptoms, and indicators of potential dysfunction. This is one of the main reasons I am going to be recommending this book to my Certified Scrum Master and Certified Scrum Product Owner students.

Another very important aspect of the book is the balance that is struck between a tactical explanation of how to set things up from an Agile perspective, her incorporation of some traditional practices she has found valuable (like maintaining a risk register), and her approach to soft skill topics like Servant Leadership. If you are familiar with Ms. Rothman’s work, this will not come as a surprise, but her ability to balance these is a rare thing that can make a topic like Agile Program Management a little more accessible.

I think for many of those who are on the path to Agile, the final three sections of the book may prove to be the most valuable. The sections on troubleshooting issues with Agile Teams and how to work with Agile in a non-Agile environment provide a great deal of sound advice based on years of experience. Finally, in the chapter on what to do if you are interested in Agile, but can’t see how it would work in your organization or can’t determine how you should get started, the author explains how to set up some basic experiments that may help demonstrate the value of an Agile approach to work.

You should buy this book. Pays for itself many times over.

I have read a number of Johanna Rothman's books. This one fills a big void in the agile community talking about agile and lean at scale without all of the silliness of the scaling frameworks. Practical advice with well written prose. She explains very clearly a lot of concepts that I had always thought, but had a hard time expressing.

If your looking to run an agile program, this is the book for you. For such a low price, this will save you from making disastrous mistakes.
