The book arose from lecture notes prepared during the years 1985-1987 while I was a graduate assistant in the Department of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University. I used a preliminary draft in a Methods of Management Science class in the spring semester of 1988 at Lock Haven University. Having been extensively tried and tested in the classroom at various stages of its development, the book reflects many modifications either suggested directly by students or deemed appropriate from responses by students in the classroom setting. My primary aim in writing the book was to address common errors and difficulties as clearly and effectively as I could.

I took the class for which this book was used as a sophomore, and found it to be very accessible. In retrospect, I would have liked to have studied some linear algebra before having taken this course, but still, I found this to be a very interesting course as a stand-alone.

About the Author
Steinberg is Professor of Psychology at Temple University, where he directs the university's program in Developmental Psychology. He has taught previously at Cornell University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University and Vassar College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors and distinction in psychology; and at Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in human development and family studies. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

Smelly Old History

All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

Reads like a novel

Wonderful story--reads like a novel. The author does a good job explaining freedom of the press--and why even opinions we hate shouldn't be muzzled. The ways the local government tried to get around freedom of the press was particularly interesting. Dangerous and wrong-headed ideas are disturbing, but dangerous and wrong-headed people have the right to publish their views.
