Excellent book

This is a very unique book - which discusses in-detail the performance of different modulation methods (SPWM, SV-PWM etc) for a variety of inverter topologies. The book is very math intensive - the authors develops an analytical technique in the first few chapters and then applies the technique it in the rest of the book. A must have for graduate students or engineers working with inverters - with a special interest in modulation techniques and characterizing their performance.

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

it's "all that and a bag of chips"

This is a demanding high school (or undemanding college) introductory textbook on the subject. Only the most rudimentary algebra is required, and honestly one could easily get through the book without even that.

The edition is handsomely printed, with a font that's easy on the eye and plenty of colorful and helpfully-glossed graphs. The chapters themselves are not too long, which helps with a student's morale, believe me.

Recently I was put into a situation where I had to go, in the space of about 4 months, from knowing jack-squat about economics to being able to teach college-level macroeconomics!

Well, I frantically collected a ton of textbooks and articles about macroeconomics, ranging from the elementary to the abstruse and got to work.

And I gotta say: when something befuddled me and I found myself threshing about from text to text for the best explanation, it was nearly always Mankiw who came through with the critical phrasing that made the idea click and got me saying: "Ohhhhhh! I get it!" most often.

Not that this was always the case. There were times when I found better explanations elsewhere (e.g., Chapter 19, on the foreign currency market, is exasperatingly elliptical and could use a major dummying-down), but more often than not, Mr. Mankiw had the goods: the clearest and most easy-to-follow way of wording or graphing a slippery or counter-intuitive concept.

Of course, it's easy to hate Mr. Mankiw: he's young, he's handsome, he's brilliant (one of the youngest full professors ever at Harvard), and he's rich (his textbooks are now standard in AP courses nationwide). Jerk!

Because of these reasons, I would love to trash his book, showing how it "ain't all that."

Well, it is. Gulp.

Only one note: If you're planning on getting this book to study macroeconomics independently, you will find one irritating drawback: there are exercises at the end of each chapter, but no answers in the back. Essentially, therefore, it's a book for schoolchildren, not mature learners.

But its explanations -- believe me -- can't be beat.

Very comprehensive and well written!

I use this book in my economics class and all I can say is that is excellent. The author describes the basic concepts without being too complicated and messy. He keeps the things simple and incorporates some real-life economic problems and discussions into each chapter. The book overall provides a clear insight into microeconomics and shows what it is all about.

Gets the job done, but nothing fancy here.

This book was the textbook used in a class I was enrolled in on microeconomics. Since it was only an introductory course, this book did a good job of covering a lot of the basic fundamentals that one needed to know before proceeding onto more advanced material. If all you are looking for is a rough guide to the subject without anything terribly in-depth, then this text work well for you. The sections that are touched on are covered extremely well and everything is explained with a lot of clarity. On the other hand, it is a rather frustrating read at times, as it breezes over some of the more interesting aspects of economics. It would have been helpful if the author had gone into more detail during certain sections, or at least had directed the reader to other publications where one could learn more.
Note to the buyer: Beware that the first six chapters in this book are identical to the first six chapters in PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS (note the "A") written by the same author. And I am not exaggerating when I say they are identical -- even the practice problems are the same. If you are looking for some variety in introducing yourself to economics, you may want to use a different set of books. To have this much repetition in books... may not be something you are interested in, so be careful before buying the second if you already own the first.

- Assess the potential number of customers you may be able to capture by looking at population size and potential traffic generators, such as office buildings, apartment buildings, and condominium complexes
- Become familiar with and identify potential target customers—​that is, customers you hope to attract to your restaurant—​through analyzing their age, income, spending habits, eating-out habits, and so on. With this information you will be able to develop tentative ideas and decisions about the types of food and beverages to serve, design and décor, service elements, and prices to charge.
- Evaluate your overall competitive environment—​the number of, or lack of, similar concepts in the area—​identify primary and secondary potential competitors, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, for example, their parking, food, bar, design and décor, and level of business at various times of the day

Once you have determined that your concept is financially viable, you will be ready to make your restaurant dream a reality. The last four chapters will walk you through the rest of your startup tasks. If you are like most entrepreneurs, you will probably need to raise some investment capital or secure a bank loan. With your financial feasibility study, break-even analysis, and capital budget in hand from chapter 5, you will be ready to sell your idea to investors and lenders.

Chapter 12 will:
-Introduce you to the SBA (Small Business Administration), the bank of last resort for most first-time restaurateurs, and walk you through the process of applying for a bank loan
-Provide some insights into how to raise capital from investors and alternative sources, such as leasing and getting tenant improvements from landlords
-Present the basics of writing a concise, comprehensive, and convincing business plan, which will demonstrate to investors and lenders not only that your restaurant has the fundamentals to be profitable, but also that you have the necessary skills and know-how to run a successful business

Chapter 13 will teach you how to read and analyze a commercial lease so you will know what questions to ask when negotiating your lease. It will also describe the different types of businesses—​corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, and so on—​so you will be able to choose the one that is best for you. In this chapter, you will also learn how to obtain a federal tax ID number and how to open business bank accounts.

Chapter 14 will discuss cost-effective ways to market your particular restaurant before it opens, during its early weeks and months, and for as long as its doors are open to the public. You will learn how to identify and use marketing methods that will help to create a memorable brand image for your restaurant and will develop a loyal customer base. For example, you will learn how to get positive word-of-mouth advertising and press write-ups and reviews, the two most powerful forms of advertising.

Chapter 15 will teach you how to identify and eliminate waste, spoilage, and employee theft. It will also teach you how to manage your inventories and labor cost to ensure maximum profitability.

Pretty basic info. for someone who has been in the industry, but really good for someone who doesn't know the in's and out's of running a restaurant. Many just think it's all fun. But it is a science to running a successful restaurant. It has a lot of information that can be good reminders, or refreshers to someone who has been in the business.

I bought this book a few years ago while at culinary school. Very simple concepts put in a simple way, lots of useful info.
Years into the restaurant business and being General Manager of a group of 5 restaurants I still come back for reference.
I'd say that "by the numbers" is a bit exaggerated, the financial info contemplated in the book is not that thorough, it is more an anecdotal take on the business.

Beautiful, Unique Models

What I like about this book is the range of kusudama types. There are geometric and floral in a single book, whereas typically, origami books are about one or the other.

One of the things that sets this apart from several of the modular origami books I've purchased recently by newer authors is that the diagrams are as thoughtful as the models themselves. The illustrations are simple and clear, even for the more complex constructions. (There is nearly nothing more frustrating than getting halfway through a module only to find that the instructions stop making sense.)

I also like that while there are models in here that would be easy for beginner folders to understand, she has models that would challenge more nimble folders.

As a folder, the best part about this book to me is that a few of the models evolve off of a single module idea, showing the versatility of a single concept and how it can transform. This concept keeps me curious and trying new methods of construction, and in this way, it is mentally challenging beyond what's on the pages.

I am a huge fan of this book. In the short time I have had it I have made 5 different models from it. The instructions are clear. The difficultly ratings for each model are spot on. The photos are inspirational. My friends and family are really impressed with all the creations that I have made from this book.

This is a great book to have if you are a modular origami enthusiast. I had this book on pre-order since June 2013. It was definitely worth the wait. The diagrams and instructions are well-written.

About the Author
MARCIAL PRADO is Professor of Spanish and International Business at California State University, Fullerton. Born in Spain, he received his Ph.D. in linguistics and Spanish from Georgetown University. He is the author of Advanced Spanish Grammar, another Wiley Self-Teaching Guide.

I am REALLY teaching myself Spanish using this book

Alright, I have read all the reviews that precede mine and many of them mention the book's one major deficiency -- it has too many typos. Just one example: on page 145, the word "descubrir" ("to discover") is introduced for the first time, appearing there in the main vocabulary list of new words for Chapter 9, and it is misspelled "descrubrir", which is inexcusable. I suspected the misspelling but was not sure until I checked my dictionary and also saw the word spelled correctly in the exercises that followed. This sort of thing is unfortunate in an otherwise fine text.
That said, this book is excellent. I am learning Spanish using this book as my main text. I started studying Spanish using this book in November 2002 and have completed fourteen of its fifteen chapters. It's now the beginning of March 2003 and I am reading the news online in Spanish with almost total comprehension. I had no prior experience with Spanish.
"Practical Spanish Grammar" has many exercises in each chapter covering both vocabulary and grammar and also three major "quizzes" of a hundred questions each covering Chapters 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15. The answers to all exercises and quizzes are given in the back of the book. In my opinion, Professor Prado has done a great job of giving me just what I need (and no more or less) to master new words and new grammatical concepts. The material is presented in a manner that fixes those concepts in my head and reinforces them with the exercises that follow.
When I finish this book, I will start going through Prado's "Advanced Spanish Grammar", which recapitulates and elaborates in more depth upon almost everything presented in "Practical Spanish Grammar" and introduces new concepts besides. Plus, "Advanced Spanish Grammar" is written ENTIRELY in Spanish and, looking ahead, I have found that I already understand it.
Now, there is one more thing: if, like me, you are trying to teach yourself Spanish on your own, you will need more than this book alone. I have purchased a few bilingual books that have texts of Spanish stories on one page and the English translation on the facing page. I don't need to be constantly referring to my dictionary when I read Spanish this way, since the translation is on the facing page. It has been the combination of Prado's "Practical Spanish Grammar" with these bilingual "story books" that have helped me to make so much progress in such a short time, especially with idiomatic expressions and other vocabulary material not found in Prado's book.
Angel Flores' "First Spanish Reader" is the best place to start with these bilingual stories because it's very much designed for the beginner (although many of the stories are real sleepers). Her "Spanish Stories" book seems to be the follow-up; the Spanish is much more advanced and the stories much more interesting. Both of Flores' books have excellent glossaries. John King edited "New Penguin Parallel Texts: Short Stories in Spanish", whose stories are more contemporary in theme and idiom.
And finally, there is a lot of Spanish to be read online for free. You can read a bilingual newspaper (containing English and Spanish side-by-side) ... ("Dos Mundos" bilingual newspaper out of Kansas City).
I don't know Prado and I am not trying to sell anyone's books. I just know that, to my surprise, this approach is working for me and "Practical Spanish Grammar" has been the fulcrum for my efforts. I recommend it highly.
A proposito, in my opinion the paperback version of "The New World Spanish/English English/Spanish Dictionary" is easiest on the eyes and easiest to handle of the dictionaries I have used or examined. Buen viaje!

A dream for some, a nightmare for others...

If you are a visual, structured learner with the long-term goal of fluency, I can think of no better place to start than with PSG. The book is logically structured, comprehensive, and has linear-qualities hard to find in most texts. I probably knew ten words of Spanish when I bought this book and when I finished (five hard months later) I could get almost any point across.

I've found the language business to be a little like the gym business: "Rock hard abs in three minutes a day" is replaced by "Two months to fluency without memorization or conjugation." PSG takes the higher road, making it a serious learning tool ill-suited to the dilettante. Each chapter starts with as many as 100 vocabulary words that must be memorized before even getting into the dialog and grammar discussions. In addition, exercises (with answers in the back) must be completed at the end of each section. If you're willing to put in the time, though, this book will give you a rock-solid foundation in the language.

What bugged me? Prado's clear, concise explanations sometimes seemed a little too concise with regards to complicated subjects. The focus on S. American vs. Spanish dialects wavers constantly, exercises were sometimes lazily conceived, confusing typos and accidental repetition are common, and vocabulary is sometimes less than practical (though if you want to be a weight-loss guru or auto mechanic in Mexico, you'll be set.) Of course, there's also the issue of books teaching you to read and write a language as opposed to speaking it-but that's a limitation of the medium and not the author...

Humble suggestions for Mr. Prado. 1: Use this forum to post a hotmail address and invite people to email you with suggestions on unclear sections and editing errors (assuming you plan to write a 3rd edition of this excellent book.) 2: Bribe some of your Mexican-American students with extra credit to record the books vocabulary, dialogs, etc. and post the recordings to the CSU website in MP3 format.

Despite my nitpicking, this was, for me, the best learning tool available.

Great Spanish book.

Ordered this as a supplement to a class my daughter and I were taking. Great book with lots of practice materials. We liked how the chapters have themes, so you can practice writing and speaking within themes.

Dan Abnett delivers again.

Dan Abnett is by far my favorite Warhammer 40,000 author. With this Eisenhorn omnibus, he delivers a coherent story following an imperial inquisitorial squad across the galaxies, fighting the the enemies of the Imperium, in the name of the God-Emperor of Mandkind. Dan's writing, as always, flows nicely, develops the characters in a compelling and logical way (following both their emotions, and the events in their backstory, and the story itself), and moves at a pace that made this book very difficult to put down, even for sleep or food. I hate spoilers, so I'm not going to talk about specifics. If you enjoy Dan's Gaunt's Ghosts series, you will likely enjoy this--although it does have a different feel (small special forces squad feel vs. infantry line unit), but is still very very enjoyable. If you don't like Gaunt's Ghosts, I will fight the urge to ask what is wrong with you, and suggest you read this anyway, and perhaps what you dislike about GG's, will be gone from this series.

A Great Trilogy with a few Flaws (Spoiler Free Review)

If you love epic science fiction, mind blowing environments, catastrophic battles, sinister characters, and you can overlook a few flaws, you'll love this book.

Story:
This omnibus features a trilogy of novels and two short stories chronicling the life of Imperial Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. An Inquisitor is an agent who carries out the Emperor's will and combs the galaxy in search of heretics who have been touched by the forces of Chaos. When heretics are found, they are forced to confess through nine steps of unpleasant 'interrogation.' An Inquisitor follows a strict moral code, and must be very careful not to be corrupted by the forces that he is exterminating or he himself may be hunted down and interrogated... most unpleasantly.

World:
The Warhammer 40K universe is amazing. It is designed around an empire in a tumultuous existence fighting everlasting wars for thousands of years. The galaxy is war torn and just about every object in the world has been built to kill or withstand bullets, lasers, and blasts. The people are hardened, heroic, and loyal to their emperor. Just do a Google image search for "Warhammer 40k" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

These books do an outstanding job at describing the landscapes, the vehicles, the weapons, the armor, the aliens, the demons... It will push your imagination to its limit.

Characters:
The characters are a mixed bag. Gregor Eisenhorn is well written and you understand his emotions and feel for him as he makes very difficult decisions. The rest of his allies are somewhat expendable. Many die off screen in a few words. "Fred was vaporized." Or "Fred died." Then Fred is suddenly replaced by Dave. Because of this, it is difficult to get attached to Gregor's crew.

The villains in this series are excellent. They are dark, malicious, deceiving, and usually have some pretty scary physical characteristics. One antagonist is another Inquisitor who had his bottom jaw destroyed and replaced by a steel one. At first I thought, "bear trap." Then I imagined it as real as possible, an uncanny valley of steel complete with a chin and bottom row of teeth, with squealing metallic sounds whenever his mouth moved. It's really fun to imagine the villains.

Writing Style:
Dan Abnett's writing style is a mixed bag. He does some things great: The Environments, the Battles, the Characters' Personalities, and the Villains.

But there were a few things that really bothered me:
1) Sentences are not written in chronological order.

Example: "This is Medea Betancore," I said, once his strong metallic grip released my hand.
If you are trying to visualize this scene, you hear a voice say the line... then realize it was Eisenhorn... then realize that he shook hands... with a cyborg... Sentence structure like this will throw you off if you enjoy "watching movies in your head" as you read fantasy. It is a minor detail, but as these creep up, you'll find yourself re-reading sentences and paragraphs over to get a better idea of what happened.

2 Pacing
At times, the book goes into great detail about where the crew went, but glosses over important details with just a few words. "We spent 2 months on X moon, then a year on Y planet, then traveled to a distant star for 3 months. And Fred was vaporized. And then we visited Inquisitor Z in a space station..." Wait a second... Fred died?! He was my favorite character and that's all we get? Why was Fred's death buried in a massive section of Warhammer codexes? Fred deserved an on-screen heroic death! Sigh... I'm gonna miss Fred.

3 Momentum
The books typically start out with a main goal, but the characters end up on a lot of side quests that almost feel like 20-50 page tangents. Then it's a big rush at the end to tell what happened. This book would have been much better if the important events were given more "screen time" and the story was paced more evenly.

These things won't bother most of the Warhammer 40K fans, though.

Action:
The action in this book is pretty damn awesome and has some of the most epic battles ever written. There are wars, skirmishes, demons, psykers, battle titans, space battles, robots, lasers, metal slugs, aliens... Warhammer fans will be happy to read these. They are "crazy-over-the-top-super-epic!"

Maturity: Older Teens - Adults
This book features violence, gore, torture, swearing, demonic possession, aliens, and mass destruction. So... umm... it's not for kids.

Overall:
I understand why Warhammer 40k fans love this book. Dan Abnett got all of the important stuff right. There are great battles, a deep story, great villains, and fantastic descriptions of environments. It definitely puts you in the heat of battle! This book also contains some unforgettable scenes of carnage! However, the books do have some flaws with the things that don't matter as much. If you're just in it for the Warhammer 40K Greatness, you will give this 5 stars. If you want to enjoy this as a book or focus on the writing style, then some of the little flaws will bother you.

Read this book if you love the Warhammer 40K environment.
Read this book if you want to push your sci-fi imagination.
Read this book if you love BATTLES!!!
Read this book if you love dark characters and dark stories.
Avoid this book, if the writing quirks that I mentioned are deal breakers.
Avoid this book, if you like happy stories.

I loved Dune. I loved this. A joy-ride. Excellent and fun read.

I've read this about 3 times, and it does not dissapoint. If you're a science fiction fan of any sort, just buy this, specially if you are new to the Warhammer 40K universe. Dan manages to cram the WH40k universe with full of interesting details (not just about armies, or wars, but about cities, customs, planets, trade practices, etc), the characters are full of personality and the story is full of suspense, action, comedy, drama. A perfect story. The WH40K sometimes gets criticized as being cheesy and over the top: Eisonhorn brings everything together and makes it real and believable, in your face. Highly recommended. If someday a Hollywood type decides to bring the WH40K universe to the big screen (or preferebly in a top notch TV series), well, this is the story that would be chosen to portray IMO. It's Game of Thrones quality stuff, I'm not kidding!
