Fingers? Realism? Character development? Who needs 'em!

Absolutely flabbergasted at the 30+ 5 star reviews. In fact, the only reason I'm writing this review is to warn others who like real novels with deep characters who move past "im going to tell you what Im going to do next" scenes.

Lets start with Leo. He has the character and charm of a wooden spoon, yet somehow everyone is "drawn" to him. I put that in quotations, because it is mentioned by practically everybody all the time. What does he do that is charming? Why nothing of course! He is somehow a well mannered, respectful 80 yr. old man in the body of a boy who grew up, at least for some time, in the apparently dark and gritty alleys, which makes no sense. But when it comes to violence, he becomes Bruce Lee. And when it comes to magic, he apparently has wards all over his body. In fact, most of the book makes no sense. Every character is drawn the same way, in the same style, and have no character, are all perfect and wealthy and respectful except for one, Alexander, the baker's son, who even though tried to get Leo killed, is essentially helped by Leo and never heard from again.

Then there's rich Argon, who immediately falls head over heals for Leo, the rich Doc who falls head over for Leo, the baker who gives away insane amounts of money to Leo (at least before 'platinum' coins are introduced), his friends who are just there, in my mind, to bail him out and also give a street vibe to Leo (Mouse, Oak, & Stick....really now?). Oh and I forgot Syntha, some ridiculously successful coffeehouse owner, just two years older than Leo (aww how perfect) who he falls in love with Im assuming immediately, because that's about all the lazy author describes. As for descriptions of any of these characters, I couldn't say in the least. The author doesn't seem to want anyone to picture them, just believe that they are who they are, which apparently is sycophants.

I love how the book sums itself up in the last passage when Leo goes to meet the Chronicler, apparently some CEO of some future corp...or something equally as laughable. He says, basically, that he befriends people, introduces xia, and meets ricin. Perfect. Absolutely perfect description of how boring the book is. Leo essentially does just that and nothing else. He makes it seem that all you need is money, which apparently, grows off trees in this world. I'm sorry to burst the authors little bubble of utopia here, but his world is so small because there are no adverse forces to Leo (maybe save some 40 pages about some evil clone....I kid you not, that is how laughably childish this all is). Oh wait I forgot. There's that one guy the keeper who beats him up, once, and then some rando who tries unsuccessfully to kill, or even put the fear in his girlfriend, a rich coffeehouse lady (yeah another lol right there). And apparently, even though his gf is a glorified waitress, she can beat up a guy who apparently grew up under an Alley Lord in a gang and cut off his finger. That brings me to my next point: the author hates fingers.
Apparently, chopping off a few digits is the holy grail of punishments in this made up 'world'. I guess genitalia would be too extreme for this author, and leg too messy and mean, but fingers? Who needs em! Everybody's got ten so chopping off a few is the perfect punishment!

I'm going to end by referring to one of the 'top' reviews mentioning that this is a 'big picture' author. I'm assuming whoever wrote this is either paid, a friend, or has never read a history book in his life, for there is nothing big picture about this book. No enemies really, no other kingdoms besides some super-warrior, xia drinking one. No people who can match Leo's godliness in everything. No hardships endured, no devious plans hatched, no counterplots, no deep friendships, rivalries, revolts, things-gone-awry, foreshadowing, world events not caused by or foretold to be caused by Leo, explanations of culture, magic, the world, how things look, the sense of space and time, etc. This is a small small picture writer, who gave up characterization to tell the most boring step by step sequence of someone destined to become the Supreme World Ruler without having to try.

Not too Remarkable (if you think about it)

The main character is clever, knows how to think and plan ahead. I'm still not too amused, let alone entertained. Being fated, given an apparent destiny kind of takes the credit out of an accomplishment. Were there any hardships that the main character had to deal with in this novel? Yes. Was there any degree of uncertainty at any point that things were not going to go exactly as planned for him? No.

In the end, there is no point in reading this book, regardless of how well or terribly it was written. The story comes down to this:

"Once upon a time there was a boy destined to start from nothing and create an undying dynasty. He did it. The end."

Mystery game

An interesting read. Mostly well done, but I felt some of the plot elements were forced, especially towards the end. A lot of mystery throughout, but at some point, one tires of this game of hide and seek with what's driving this story, and wants to know the rules of play. the reader is left in the dark throughout, although we have enough clues to venture some guesses at what's really going on. Unfortunately my curiosity waned. Others might enjoy this mystery game more.

Lots of earthy conversations and conflicts provide ample opportunity for Ganser's particular talent--characterization with vitality. However, he does not annoy with overacting, and he comfortably switches to informative prose. Lots of technical details about these "air ships" and their place in 1960s' warfare are mixed in, and the combination of styles creates the narrative drive of this military memoir. The performance ofChickenhawk, bringing together men and war, is so frank in places that one often feels vicarious involvement. understanding my grandson's return from Afghanistan

I gave it a 4 only because it's not the original Chicken hawk, my life long favorite book. ( i just keep reading it over and over). Chiken hawk is the original five. Back to the world would get a five if it was Mason's only work..
My farm raised grandson is home from a sixteen month tour of Iraq and two tours Afgahnistan. I sobered him up, got him smoking medical pot, and literally read back in the world to him in the pickup while I had him trapped and stoned! I know Masons work saved his life as i got him through the PTSD progran at the fkn VA! He is now in helicopter school with 48 hours and no longer contemplating suicide!
The war on drugs is almost over here in wash state and our Veterans for Compassionate Care has declared war on veteran suicides.
Bob Mason's book, back in the world will, be the first required reading during the preliminary detox at the Clare residential center for veterans in Spokane Wash.
Bob Mason's writing style and frank honesty does and will continue to save veterans lives !

To understand the Vietnam "Helicopter War" this is a must read.

As a combat infantry veteran (aka "Grunt") of the Vietnam War I can fully appreciate this author's work. The concept of using helicopters as the primary means of inserting, supporting and extracting ground troops into hostile jungle territory was initiated in 1965 by the 1st Cavalry Division, dubbed "Airmobile" for this reason. The most famous "test" of this concept occurred at Landing Zones X-Ray and Albany in the Ia Drang Valley during November of that year under the command of Lt. Col. Harold "Hal" Moore, and is documented in both his written work and the highly acclaimed movie "We Were Soldiers." Mr. Mason served as a Warrant Officer / Pilot of the infamous "Huey" helicopter during this as well as countless other Combat Assault and other missions.

Mason's writing is masterful; entertaining, highly credible and convincing. He takes us with him through the rigors of "chopper school" and subsequently half way around the world to Vietnam where he witnesses and experiences the sheer brutality of war. Chopper pilots and crews not only worked under extremely dangerous conditions for extended periods, but also worked exhausting schedules. The accounts of everyday life for him are a revelation to others who served in different capacities. Infantry soldiers naturally consider their personal battle experiences as the most graphic and dangerous, but after reading an account such as "Chickenhawk" we have to admit that while our life on the ground was not enviable, life in the air was no better, and often times much worse. I served a couple years later on the ground with the 1st Cavalry. We considered the choppers as our "lifeline" then, and we appreciate them even more today, attributing our survival in large part to their efforts and sacrifices.

As with many who experienced the Vietnam War personally, Mason unfortunately brought the war home with him in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). His experience was the basis for the highly acclaimed book "Recovering from the War" by his wife Patience H. C. Mason.

My review cannot fully communicate the value of this exceptionally well written work. I recommend it highly to all those who served, but also to anyone touched personally by the Vietnam War, whether it be family, friend or others simply interested. And finally, I salute you Mr. Mason for your service and dedication; it has not been forgotten.

Good Read!

I was talking to a helicopter friend of mine in her hangar about my fascination with helicopters and how it took hold when I worked for the USFS in 1976. Spruce budworm was ravaging the PNW, mostly the dryer forests of Eastern Washington. My job was as a member of a crew of two to four who were responsible for targeting areas of the forest for sampling. We traveled mostly by helicopter because usually there were no roads and it would take days to hike in. I told her of the "crazy" chopper pilots who had come back from Vietnam and were flying commercially as subcontractor to the USFS. She suggested I read "Chickenhawk," by Robert Mason, if I was interested in that sort of thing. Yes, I am. I was eligible for the draft in '71 but U.S. troop strength had peaked in 1968. Still, like all else in this situation, I worried I might get drafted. I downloaded the book and started reading, putting it down only twice before finishing. Mason's narrative is plainly written and down to earth as he tells us about flying in the jungles of wartime Vietnam. I had heard the pilots I worked with in '76 talk about many of the sorts of situations Mason writes about. I don't remember if I believed them at that time, thinking maybe it's just a little wartime bravado. This is spite of the extreme flying those pilots did with a crew of four, excluding the pilot. After flying with them for just a week, I started bringing extra underwear to work.

I am glad this book found its way to me. A boatload of years have passed since those days for me but I remember the voices and the stories of the pilots, most still wearing battle fatigues. "Chickenhawk" showed me that their stories were true. Remembering again, I knew I was fortunate to have that experience with those guys. "Chickenhawk" is a graphic chronicle of how they got that experience. Read it.

AACEI does not use this as a reference for the test anymore since it is out of print. I got it cheap, and it is much harder to digest than the AACEI reference books we need for the test. I will still keep it as a reference just in case it shows up as a reference in a technical paper from a few years ago.

Truly Top-Notch

I spent two months backpacking through India in the summer of 2003, and the Footprint guide was tremendous. I also brought the Rough Guide to India, but Footprint was much more useful (though both blew away Lonely Planet!).

There is great coverage of smaller towns in all regions of the country, something that is invaluable if you're spending an extended period of time in the country. Almost every time I'd be overnighting in some obscure town as part of a bus journey, I'd at least find a paragraph or two, which saved the day more than once.

The maps are great. The most readable I've seen in any guidebook. The detailed maps of the whole country in the back were extremely useful.

The background section was also the most in-depth I've seen among India guidebooks. Very good.

All in all, this is definitely the best guidebook to use for India. One of the biggest benefits of it though, is that it isn't very popular. If Lonely Planet says a place is cheap, you can guarantee they've quadrupled their price since then. Footprint India really helps you stay off the beaten tourist path... I rarely had encounters with other travellers... almost all of my time was spent with locals, and the Footprint guide is definitely geared towards that. Most of the hotels reviewed aren't backpacker-focused (though those are there), but are mostly used by locals travelling for various reasons.

I spent several weeks in 2004 traveling through India using only this guide. The hotel listings were very helpful and even a relative that accompanied me on my travels (who is a cosmopolitan native) was impressed at the hotels we found for very reasonable rates and convenient locations. I always asked to view the room before checking in because my standards vary from their standards, but this book gave me a great headstart on which hotels to visit. If I didn't agree with their recommendation, I always found a similar hotel. It is a bit thin on the history and culture, for which I suggest a Fodor's.

David A. Croteau (Ph.D., Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament and Greek in the Seminary and School of Ministry at Columbia International University. He is co-editor (with Andreas J. Köstenberger) of Which Bible Translation Should I Use? (B&H Academic, 2013) and author of Tithing after the Cross (Energion, 2013).

Using Commonly Misunderstood NT Verses as a Model for Faithful Bible Interpretation

We have all heard someone reference a verse to support something and then think to ourselves, or say to the person, “I don’t think that verse means what you think it means.” No doubt there are many usual suspects when it comes to verses in the Bible that are so twisted and mangled from their original context and meaning, that one wonders if the person citing them has even read the verse(s) in the Bible itself or just quoted on a picture they saw in a bookstore. There are entire books (which shall remain nameless) that are based on misinterpreting single verses. What’s worse, these books are purchased by the truckloads.

Seeking to unravel a number of misinterpreted verses in the New Testament, David A. Croteau, professor of New Testament and Greek at Columbia International University, has written Urban Legends of the New Testament: 40 Common Misconceptions (B&H, 2015). Croteau takes 40 misunderstood verses from the NT and sets the record straight for those who are willing to hear.

Here are some examples of the passages Croteau takes on:

Matthew 18:20 – Is Jesus promising He will be with you when you pray with others or that He is with a churches decision to discipline an erring brother or sister in Christ?
Mark 6:3 – Was Jesus just a carpenter or was He actually skilled in working with more than just wood?
Luke 2:1-7 – Was Jesus born in a stable away from the owners house or was the stable actually inside the owners house?
Acts 18:3 – Is Paul’s example of supporting himself by making tents an example pastors have to follow or just an example of how to apply other principles?
Romans 1:16 – Does the power of the gospel destroy things or does it accomplish its purpose?
Philippians 4:13 – Is Paul promising us that we can do anything we put our minds to with Christ’s strength or that we can be content in any situation with Christ’s strength?
1 Thessalonians 5:22 – Is this a passage about ones lifestyle or about being able to discern true and false teaching?
Revelation 3:16 – Why are Christians being compared to hot, cold, and lukewarm water?
In order to set the record straight on these passages Croteau delves into any relevant Old Testament background, first century Roman or Jewish background, Greek word meanings, grammatical construction, broader passage context, and explores the sometimes impossible implications that the misreadings of these texts produce. Some of these passages are misunderstood primarily on the grammar level, the context level, or the historical background level.

Urban Legends of the New Testament is a prime example of why learning the basics of Bible interpretation (hermeneutics) is so important. Whether or not you have fallen for all of the urban legends Croteau lays to rest, you will walk away with an appreciation for the hard work of good Bible interpretation many Christians give their lives to and why responsible Christians should have discerning minds when it comes to interpreting the Bible.

I highly recommend this book for all Christians as a model for how to read the Bible responsibly.

Other than the Bible, I hesitate to use the term "must read" for a book. This one is definitely a "should read" for anyone who teaches, preaches, or wants to minister more faithfully. The book is engaging, and offers both a negative (doesn't mean this) and positive (means this) response to common urban legends of the NT. You'll be surprised by some beliefs you had that you didn't even realize were not correct, or should be adjusted. The book is also great in pointing to additional resources for further study. Pastors, seminarians, and lay people will all benefit from this book.

Helpful, Engaging, and Insightful.

David Croteau is the professor of New Testament & Greek at Columbia International University. Croteau holds a Th.M. and Ph.D. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the editor and contributor to a number of books, including You Mean I don’t have to Tithe? A Biblical and Theological Analysis of Tithing (Wipf & Stock, 2010), Perspectives on Tithing (B&H Academic, 2011), and Which Bible Translation Should I Use? Leading Experts Discuss 4 Major Versions (B&H Academic, 2012). Croteau has also published several articles in Bulletin of Biblical Research and Master’s Seminary Journal. Most recently, Croteau rattles cages with the release of a challenging and yet helpful volume, Urban Legends of the New Testament: 40 Common Misconceptions (B&H Academic, 2015).

In Urban Legends of the New Testament, Croteau seeks to deconstruct 40 interpretive myths, or “urban legends,” encountered in the New Testament text. An urban legend, according to Croteau, is “a commonly circulated myth, repeated throughout the culture as common knowledge, but which isn’t true” (p. xiii). Croteau continues, “interpretations of certain passages in the New Testament have fallen victim to this. Somehow something false is stated, and it gets heard and passed down without someone checking all the facts” (p. xiii). Today many such “urban legends” exists within both the pulpit and the pews, and continue to be circulated without hesitation. It is here that Croteau embodies a clear voice of reason as he calls the reader to set aside tradition for the sake of exegesis and interpretation.

Urban Legends of the New Testament tackles a number of well-known urban legends. But, Croteau also addresses some that may be less familiar to the average reader. For example, some of the urban legends include, the “Eye of a Needle” being a gate in Jerusalem (pp. 61–66) and Hell being a reference to a First-Century garbage dump near Jerusalem (pp. 49–54). Each chapter is titled after the urban legend itself, “not the correct interpretation of the text(s) at hand”(p. xiv), followed by a brief explanation. Subsequently, Croteau deconstructs each of the legends and provides a positive exegesis for his understanding of the correct interpretation. Finally, Croteau concludes each chapter with a section devoted to the application of his presentation, as well as an annotated bibliography divided by resource type (i.e. books, journals, websites, etc.) for further study.

Personally I found Croteau to be both a model of integrity and a true exemplar of compassion in his handling of each of the 40 urban legends. He is engaging and consistent across the board in his treatment of these misunderstanding, and his tone is truly something to be admired. I also found the application section to be extremely helpful in processing the specific legends, especially for the pastor or teacher who would take on the responsibility of exposing such myths. Still, the reader must be fully prepared for the possibility of a challenge when picking up this book, because Urban Legends of the New Testament is sure to expose the presence of some urban legends in their own thought. Of course, if this breaks down the wall of bad hermeneutic and re-shapes a more faithful understanding of the text, who could be opposed to such challenge? In the end, if you still find yourself at ends with Croteau’s conclusion, I am confident that you will still walk away encouraged by the carefulness he exemplifies as he handles the biblical text. This book comes highly recommended!

About the Author
Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia, Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan, A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and Enlightenment: The Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in Göttingen, Tübingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977–ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250—1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993), and John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between 1996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. In 2003, Professor Turner was appointed Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.
