My favorite of the series!

I chose this rating because I am 100% satisfied with this purchase. I liked this book because I couldn't put it down!! I sucked into the plot and found myself thinking of the characters and story line even when I wasn't actively reading. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good love story, but is tired of how over sexualized the romance genre has become. Splintered Oak is christian fiction, but it's not preachy. If you are a Christ follower is will speak deeply to your heart, and if you are not, you will will enjoy this story none the less. Excellent read, I highly recommend it!

A suck-you-in-story that is well worth your time!

Never before have I read a piece of fiction that is so vivid and honest. The characters could be my friends, I felt so in tune with their feelings. Their struggles are not uncommon, but are expressed in such a way that invites deeper understanding of the demons they face. Thank you, Ms. Gray, for not sugar coating reality, and for leaving your readers feeling encouraged and full of hope about a loving God.

Awesome Ending to the Winsor Series!!!

I loved Splintered Oak!! It tells all of the tidbits that have helped Jake's life spin out of control and how he had to hit bottom to come out of his self-destructive lifestyle. Naomi set an amazing example for young Christian women today by showing that Christians aren't perfect and can live for Christ in today's society. The Godly family DOES still exist and I am glad it was depicted in the storyline and not just assumed to be there. I recommend to mothers of young women and it is a good read for the moms as well.

Add on: I have just finished Splintered Oak for the second time and missed a few things the first time. Once Jake let God take control of his life he went back and mended relationships from his past. That is so hard to do, yet he did it humbly. Naomi stood true to her beliefs reguarding her boundaries of intimacy with a guy before marriage and I was so proud of her! Don't want to give the book away, and I still reccomend it!

Excellent set of puzzles

This is a great puzzle collection, ideal for an evening activity of family or friends, 4-8 people. The puzzles are not too easy, not too hard. Note that some puzzles will instruct you to rip out pages from the book, and there is really no way around this without tediously photocopying the whole book, since later puzzles will rely on those pages being no longer present. At the end of the day you will end up with a destroyed book but a superb experience. Well worth the price for any puzzler that likes solving puzzles in a team. Solo puzzlers may enjoy it too, but progress will be slower without a friend to bounce ideas with.

A Pleasing Plethora of Polished Puzzles!

This was a marvelous puzzle experience from the intriguing first challenge to the finale. The puzzles were elegant and tough enough to feel good about having solved them, but not so tough that one will be overly frustrated. It's a beautiful blend, and the final payoff is very fun. Very highly recommended!

Passed on 2nd try using this book

Ok, here is my story:

On my first attempt, I took FE exam right after graduation in summer. I used NCEES FE Reference Handbook and the practice exam sold by NCEES for preparation. I skimmed over Reference Handbook while doing the practice exam. After two weeks, I showed up for the exam thinking I am going to pass. I was WRONG. I failed miserably. I calculated my raw score to be 48%. I would say 20% of the test was very similar to the practice exam. I found the exam to be easy (even though I failed) because I knew most of the materials (or at least I have seen them before), but I wasn't able to quickly point out the equations in Reference Handbook to get the answers. And sometimes, you know the materials, but because you haven't done or seen that particular question while in school, then you will get stuck on doing it or you will get wrong answer trying to solve it. After all, I had to guess a lot of the questions, and since I got stuck on some of the questions, then I ran out of time while still having to answer remaining 20 questions.

After huge disappointment and some downtime, I realized that I needed to pass this test no matter how many attempts it took (got to be POSITIVE in life). I knew I needed to do a lot of questions to boost my exam taking speed and get myself familiar with as many questions as I could. So, I bought this book on feprep.com (eBook version). I started doing all the questions without looking at the solutions. Yes, you need to do it the hard way if you want to pass this exam. I only looked over solution after I was done fully attempting to solve a problem. It took me about good 40 days and 4 hours a day on average to do all the questions, relearn all the materials that were a bit dull, and review everything from beginning to end. The problems in this book are way more difficult than what I got on the test, which is a good thing because it forced me to relearn all the materials again. As a result, hopefully I am a better engineer today that I was yesterday. Anyways, I showed up on the exam day being prepared, I was able to get through the first 55 questions (i.e., the first part of the exam before taking a short break) with ease. It took me 2 hours and 10 minutes, and I only flagged 8 questions for review. So, I knew I did well and had 3 hours and 20 minutes left for the second part of the exam which is a bit more difficult than the first part (at least, that's how I felt). I got through the second part (i.e., 55 questions) and had 18 questions flagged for review. Although, I had 20 minutes remaining, so, I decided to make educated guess on the questions that I wasn't able to get the right answers. Usually, in some questions, you could easily rule out one of the answers because it doesn't even belong there (if you know the materials, you can easily point that one out). And then, you are left with 3 answers. At this point you could either guess or pick the answer that is more closely represent the value of your wrong calculation (I am not sure if this worked or not but that's what I did).
I took the test on Tuesday, and I got my passing result the following Wednesday.

Just a side note; by no means I am a smart kid. I was in bottom 10% of my class. I came to USA as an immigrant at age 16 and worked my way up. I graduated with GPA lower than 3.0. My school has a passing rate of 90%+ for the first time exam takers. I just hope this review would give you enough courage and boost of energy to finally pass this test and move forward with your career.

Pretty good considering the circumstances.

This book is nicely balanced containing representative problems on the interest subjects. Considering this book was put together with practically no feed back from actual examines taking the new CBT exam, clearly it was carefully created and not just rushed out. Still, I wish they could actually refer to the page in the NCEES Reference Manual where the formulas used can be found as sometimes it's very hard to find them, and It's very important that you know where to find them in the Manual you will use in the exam. Example, in the solution, adding a note that says "from page X in the NCEES manual", then show the solved problem.

This book is a great start. If this book can be made to have double the practice problems it would be gold! I would say get this only if you have most of the concepts clear or are fresh out of college, else get the review book first. I am ok with the concepts and had previously reviewed so I only had problems with understanding the solutions in very few cases, in which I can opt to omit the problems in the real exam and still manage to get a good score. This book has been very helpful for me in getting ready, yet I still have to take the exam to really judge how much it helped, but It is a nice tool.

Eric Carle and Tomie dePaola: Author One-on-One

Eric Carle is the creator, author, and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other children’s books. Tomie dePaola is the author and illustrator of Strega Nona: Her Story and countless other books. They recently had a conversation about their careers as picture book authors.

Tomie dePaola: When I was only four years old, I announced to my family in particular and to the world in general that I was going to become an artist, and write stories and draw pictures for books. I never swayed from that early declaration. I’ve always been curious to know, what inspired you to become a creator and illustrator of picture books?

Eric Carle: My career began as a graphic designer and for a number of years I worked as an art director for an advertising agency in New York. In the mid 1960's Bill Martin, Jr. saw an ad of a red lobster that I had designed and asked me to illustrate his Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Well, I was set on fire! I was so inspired by this book, and the opportunity to illustrate it changed my life. After that, I started to create my own books, both words and pictures, and really it was then that I had found my true course in life.

Now, I have a question for you, Tomie. How would you describe your artistic style, and has it changed over time?

Tomie dePaola: My illustration style is heavily influenced by folk art--strong simple shapes, bold lines, color, color, color and a deceptive simplicity. My style began to develop early in art school, and through the years, it hasn’t changed very much, but it has refined itself. How would you describe yours?

Eric Carle: My aim with my work is to simplify and refine, be logical and harmonious. I like to use simple shapes, bright colors and a lot of white space. I write for the child inside of me. That is always where I begin.

Tomie dePaola: I do, as well. The only audience I keep in mind is that four-year-old in me. People sometimes ask me what advice I would give to young artists. I always think of the wonderful advice I received from my twin cousins when they were in art school in the late '30s. They told me, “Practice, practice, practice and don’t copy.”

Eric Carle: I often tell people about the four magic letters: DO IT. I want to be encouraging but I can only offer the example of my own experience, which is just one approach. There are many wonderful artists to learn about, which is important. But you must use your own imagination. You have to just do it.

Tomie dePaola: How do you feel knowing that a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is sold every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world?

Eric Carle: It is hard for me, maybe for others too, to grasp this concept. But I am truly honored that my story is enjoyed by so many and that it is now being shared by a generation of parents who grew up with my book. How about your Strega Nona. She is one of your most popular characters. Can you share how she came to be?

Tomie dePaola: In the ‘70s when I was teaching at a college, we were required to attend faculty meetings. I always sat in the back with a yellow legal pad. Everyone thought I was taking notes. At one meeting a doodle appeared of a little lady with a big nose and a big chin. I named her Strega Nona, and the rest is history. Speaking of history, how will you be celebrating the third annual Very Hungry Caterpillar Day this year?

Eric Carle: On The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, March 20th, I will probably be at home with my wife, Bobbie (I am a bit of a hermit, actually). But I will be saying a little toast to the caterpillar for whom I have a special place in my heart. And speaking of holidays, isn’t your favorite holiday Christmas. Do you have a special Christmas memory?

Tomie dePaola: Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite Christmas was the one when I received tons and tons of art supplies: everything from an easel to paints, pads and pads of paper, and “how to draw” books.

Classic!

I love Tomie dePaola! I read this book to my children, over and over, what felt like a thousand times. But when my grandchildren came along, I had to go out and buy it for them as well. I'm still willing to read it another thousand times, if they want me to. Books have to be great if you're going to read them that much, unless you're really into self-torture. Most of the garbage that is put out for children today is not worth the paper it's printed on - worth even less if it's a kindle ebook.

This story has a great plot, a simple moral, adorable pictures, and the kids love it. We usually follow it up with having spaghetti for supper!

Magical and humorous

We started reading this book (my child is 3.5) a week ago and we have read it almost twice a day ever since. My daughter does not lack for favorite books but the fantastical aspect and the charming humor in this book have certainly captured her attention. She feels the anticipation as the pasta begins to overtake the town, she feels relief when Strega Nona stops the pot with a sputter, and she giggles with glee when Big Anthony's pot belly grows. Sometimes I get tired of reading longer books but I personally love to read this one and animate it with my voice to suit the charming story. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful too and I love sharing a fable from another culture with my daughter. Really a pleasure.

Great book for children - a classic!

This book teaches children about listening to their elders and the results of not doing so. I just purchased it for my grandchildren after making pasta for them. We read it together and they really enjoyed it.

Finally, master DM fundraiser Jeff Brooks spills his guts

This will not be a typical review. First, full disclosure, I know Jeff Brooks by reputation. He was a creative principal at Seattle's legendary Domain Group. The Domain Group was one of those shooting stars in the fundraising industry: they did pioneering work, they blazed new trails for 15 years or so, and now they're gone; bought out ... but not forgotten. These days, Jeff works for TrueSense, a national-level direct mail firm. Insiders rank him among America's very best fundraising copywriters. He also writes, as a public service, the incomparable Future Fundraising Now blog, a professional "tips" bastion of common sense and best practices. Second, full disclosure, although I've only met Jeff once face to face, a decade ago, we do exchange emails, mostly about the mysteries of direct mail. He's the master. I'm the cravenly humble student. Jeff sent me the manuscript for his book a few months ago, to see what I thought. I read it once. I read it twice. And now I flip through it repeatedly every chance I get. Why? Because I write fundraising direct mail for a living. And the only reason I have long-standing clients is because I make them money. And the only reason I can predictably make them money is because I've learned from incomparable masters like Jeff. He is at the very front of a very short line of experts. This book fully reveals what runs through Jeff's mind as he writes a successful direct mail appeal. It's fascinating and unpredictable. There is nothing else like it in the how-to book market (and I buy them all, out of desperation). Jeff's new book is a gift to the nonprofit world. Buy it. Learn from the very best.

Give a copy to anyone who reviews or edits your fundraising copy

Intially, I was skeptical about this book. All of the reviews seemed to be from people who knew the author or are professional copywriters, and they were a little too persuasive and polished. "This is the best fundraising book ever," etc.

I'm 20something fundraiser getting a crash course in the science of fundraising. I've never met the author nor do I plan do. I'm in online fundraising, but these concepts translate easily.

This book is a great summary of the concepts I've discovered over the last 6-8 months about effective fundraising. It's the sort of book that gives you a foundation. It would would be great to come back to before you write copy or use it to get everyone in your organization on the same page about the purpose of your fundraising communications.

I finished my copy last night and passed it off to my colleague this morning. I want my supervisor and management team to read it. Soon.

The book reads like great fundraising copy, which means it's a fast read. It's entertaining and uses stories. I sat down last night to read a chapter, and was 34 pages into the book before I looked up.

This book's strength is how quickly it engages the reader and distills the key points of great fundraising writing. It would be an excellent book to give to anyone who writes, reviews or edits your fundraising communications.

Like an ATM for Fundraising

In fact, order several copies - especially extras for your CEO, program folks and key board members. I guarantee it'll soon have a dog-eared, underlined and well-worn place on your bookshelf providing tested ammunition to counter all the copy-related nonsense you encounter.

Not only is Jeff's Guide jam-packed with practical advice on copywriting (long vs. short messages...grammar for fundraisers...the importance of being urgent...not to mention the importance of being plain, corny and obvious) it's written by a leading advocate of donor-focused fundraising.
